The Safari Zone is a special gated Pokémon preserve located east of Polder Town, in East Borrius.
It is a self-contained mini-game involving a unique catching mechanic, four difficulties, increased encounter chances for gen 3 starters, and it is the only way to acquire certain rare Pokémon. So it is an essential visit if you want to fill up your Pokedex.
The Safari Game (Rules & Overview)

To participate in the Safari Game at the Safari Zone, speak to one of the two men with interesting haircuts at the eastern end of the gatehouse building. Each Safari Game session costs 500 Poke Dollars.
You’ll also be asked to choose a difficulty:
- Easy
- Medium
- Hard
- Insane
This difficulty choice determines the particular Pokemon available to catch in your Safari Zone session. Additionally, each increase in difficulty increases how fast the Pokemon can move and, therefore, how difficult they are to catch in the first place.
At the beginning of each session you’ll be given 30 Safari Balls. When you run out of Balls, the session will end and you will need to start a new one to continue capturing Pokemon.
Capturing Pokemon
When you enter the Safari Zone, the screen changes to a grassy field, and a wild Safari Zone Pokemon will appear.
Your goal is to throw a Safari Ball at the Pokemon to catch it – and since the Pokemon is a moving target, this may be more difficult than it sounds.

Use the Arrow Keys to move the red capture ring, and throw a Safari Ball using A.
And even if your Ball hits the target, the Pokemon still has a chance to break free. You can try as many times as you like, so long as you have the Safari Balls for it.
Pressing the B button gives you the option to run and skip that particular Pokemon if you do not want to waste time and Balls catching it. But to do this you will need to pay a fee on balls:
- 5 on Easy Mode
- 4 on Medium Mode
- 3 on Hard and Insane Modes
The START option gives you the choice of feeding special Berries to the wild Pokemon, but they must be one of these berries:
- Razz Berries
- Bluk Berries
- Nanab Berries
- Wepear Berries
- Pinap Berries
Each Safari Pokemon can be affected by up to three Berries at a time, and their effects do stack with each other. If you want more details about using berries then scroll down to the bottom of this page for more info.

Most of these berries also have stackable effects, meaning you can use multiple to mix effects, or you can use the same berry twice or three times to have the effect applied further.
