The Polder Town Gym has an effect that can potentially cause your Pokemon to change their types. Here’s how this works: each Pokemon sent into battle will adapt and change their type corresponding to the first 2 moves in their moveset.

For example, if your Pokemon has a Fire and Dark-type move as the first 2 moves in their moveset, that Pokemon will become a Fire / Dark-type. This condition affects both you and opponents.

Additionally, Rainy conditions occur during the battle with Tessy which strengthens all Water-type attacks.

Polder Town Gym Puzzle (Step-by-Step)

Gym entrance / Pokémon Unbound
Gym entrance

The Polder Town Gym features small pieces of land spread across a swamp/pond. The water here is murky and filled with steam that progressively makes your vision hazy after every few steps, fully blinding you at its peak. If your vision is blinded while you’re surfing inside the pond, you’ll be swept back to the gym’s entrance by water waves.

The goal here is to navigate through the swamp, finding the correct path to Tessy, while also ensuring you don’t become blinded by the steam while you’re surfing.

For every step in the tutorial below, make sure that your vision is completely clear before entering the water. You can force this by walking on land to make the steam trigger and clear out, all while remaining completely safe from the waves by staying on land.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on quickly solving the gym’s puzzle and reaching Tessy:

Step 1: From the entrance, use surf and head straight up to the small piece of land with the Trainer on it. This is an optional battle and can be skipped if you stay near the edge of the area.

Step 2: From here, head towards the small piece of land coming up on your right. This area hosts another Trainer battle which is skippable if you position yourself at the far edge of the land.

Step 3: Surf to the piece of land towards the north, next to the big tree.

Step 4: From here, make your way further north where you’ll find another small piece of land with a tree.

Step 5: Now Surf towards the top-left of your screen to find the next area you need to reach. This isn’t visible before you enter the water, but the number of steps needed to trigger the steam is increased at this point, so you can easily reach it.

Step 6: From here, go to the piece of land directly in front of you to reach Tessy.

Be sure to avoid the vines and lily pads shooting out of the water here, as these block your path and can cause enough steam build up to force you all the way back.

Tips for Defeating Tessy

Here are some tips for battling Tessy:

Rearrange Your Movesets Effectively: You might want to consider switching up the slots of your first 2 moves to ensure that your Pokemon change their types appropriately. Although most of Tessy’s Pokemon are weak to Ground and Rock, you should avoid changing your Pokémon’s type into either of these since Tessy’s Pokemon have dual nature featuring Water. This will effectively counter all Ground and Rock-type Pokemon.

Instead, it’s ideal to convert your Pokemon into Grass or Electric-types, since these offer the best results both in terms of offense and defense against Tessy. If doing this is not an option, you should generally try to avoid having your Pokemon converted to Rock, Ground, Fire, or Psychic types, as these are countered by Tessy one way or another.

Prepare for Mega Gyarados: It’s recommended to have one or two Grass-type Pokemon that are strong enough to stand against Tessy’s Gyarados. This is essential because Gyarados Mega-evolves once it’s sent into battle and will pose a huge threat due to its increased stats and aggressive moveset.

Strategize for Early Battle: Tessy’s difficulty spike decreases as the fight goes on. Usually, the first 2 Pokemon she uses are Toxapex and Gyarados – both of whom also happen to be her strongest ones. It’s important for you to prepare a strategy on dealing with each of these Pokemon beforehand.

Toxapex is less aggressive than Gyarados but is dangerous due to its Toxic Spikes move which poisons all Pokemon that enter the battle for a few turns. Additionally, its Poison Jab has a high chance of applying strong Poison to your Pokemon. On the other hand, Gyarados has a versatile arsenal of moves in its set. You should prioritize going all out on it as soon as possible.

In both cases, Tessy is likely to use a Hyper Potion to fully restore each Pokémon’s HP when it falls below the 50% mark.
