The Redwood Village Gym features special conditions based on the story of Benjamin Butterfree: when a Pokémon’s HP bar is depleted in battle, it devolves instead of fainting as normal.
When a Pokemon reaches its base stage and cannot devolve any further, it faints. Once devolved, Pokemon will be unable to use any moves from their set which require evolution. Mega Evolutions in this Gym do not count as an additional evolution and will be treated as the normal evolved form of a Pokemon.
Redwood Gym Puzzle (Step-by-Step)

The Redwood Gym features a relatively straightforward puzzle. At the entrance, you’ll find 4 separate rooms, each hosting a rock with a button. The goal here is to figure out the correct sequence in which the buttons must be pressed.
Doing this successfully reveals a hidden room leading to the Gym Leader. Here’s how you can solve the puzzle quickly.
Step 1: From the entrance, head into the third room from the left (pictured below)

A Trainer hides behind this door and will trigger a battle as soon as you enter.

Tips for Defeating Benjamin

Use a Diverse Team: Benjamin is a surprisingly easy Gym Leader with multiple countering strategies and minimal restrictions. However, it’s important to use a well-rounded team that features multiple types of Pokemon so you can effectively counter him.
The ideal strategy is to include at least 1 strong Pokemon of each of the following types: Fire, Rock, Ground, and Electric. This team composition ensures perfect offense and defense against Benjamin.
Focus on Scizor: The only real danger posed by Benjamin is his Mega Scizor. It has both offensive and defensive moves in its arsenal and can pack a huge punch if given the opportunity. Additionally, Benjamin is highly likely to use a Max Potion on Scizor when its HP falls below the 50% mark.
Since Scizor is a Bug / Steel-type, it’s super weak to Fire-type moves (4x). Considering this, any strong Fire-type Pokemon (e.g Emboar) should be more than enough to handle it. If you don’t plan on using a Fire-type, plan your strategy accordingly because Mega Scizor will surely pose a challenge.
