You leave Route 10 and find yourself in Tehl Town.
Your mission is to help Jax by finding another way to get into Route 9, which has been blocked off by Shadow Grunts.
Exploring the Town
First, head to the Poke Mart in the middle of town.

Speaking to the man with blonde hair inside here will get you a Water Stone, useful for evolving Water Pokémon.

Southwest of the Mart is the house of the Name Rater.

The Name Rater is useful if you want to change the nickname of any Pokémon you have.

This is where one of Professor Log’s researchers lives, and if you go visit her you’ll get a very useful item to use on your travels.

However, she’ll need to see that you’ve caught 30 Pokémon before giving you the Dowsing Machine.
This key item will lead you to find hidden items and will be extremely useful in an upcoming area.
The other scientist in this house gives you a mission to show him all four seasonal forms of Sawsbuck.

You’ve encountered three forms of Deerling in the wild so far – Spring in Route 6, Winter in Route 8, and Autumn in Route 9.
When you reach Route 12 in a little while you’ll see a Summer Deerling, and then you can complete the collection.
As a reward, the scientist will offer to change the Nature of any Pokémon on your team for free, but then charge you P50000 for any additional change.
Speaking to the woman to the north (outside near the Pokecenter) will get us 5 Quick Balls.

North of the Pokémon Center is a set of stairs that lead down into an open grassy courtyard.

The entrance to the KBT Expressway is here, but if you go inside you’ll get a little bit of a nasty surprise.
Advancing the Story

Just like the route west to Route 9, the path is blocked by a whole bunch of Shadow Grunts.
However, in this section there is a Gem Family member you can visit.

Tehl Town entrance |
The only way to get out of town is to go to the northeast house in Tehl Town and head inside.

You’ll see a staircase leading down to the Underground Pass.
Underground Pass

The Underground Pass is just one long path, and there’s no wild Pokémon here to battle.

Speaking to the man just inside the entrance will let you participate in a bit of a speed challenge – he’ll give you a prize if you can make it to the other side of the Pass in under 15 seconds, with another prize on offer for under 10 seconds.
Both are impossible without the Motorcycle, and pretty tricky even with it.

About halfway through the tunnel is a man who will give you a mission to find at least 150 hidden items.
If you succeed, you’ll get a Gold Bottle Cap.

The Underground Pass is littered with hidden items, and they’re best found using the Dowsing Machine.
Activate it, follow the arrows in the top left of the screen and then search when you see a star pop up.

If you were fast enough through the tunnel, the man gives you a prize.
The challenge resets every day – they’re a random stat-boosting Vitamins item (HP Up, Protein, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Carbos).

Heading up the stairs at the far end of the tunnel will get you to a small clearing in the middle of an autumnal forest.

When you leave the house, head south on the path and you’ll come to another small clearing.

Keep going south until you see the path turn to the west – this is the entrance to Route 9, and be warned, it’s crawling with Shadow Grunts.

The first person you see as you emerge from the trees is a Grunt, who challenges you straight away.

After you beat him, Jax shows up, wanting to join our party.

If we accept, we’ll only be able to use our first three Pokémon and every battle will be a Double Battle. Jax’s Pokémon are a Staraptor, a Magneton and a Gastrodon.
If you want more flexibility though, it’s best to decline his offer. He’ll show up later when you need him.

Route 9 mainly consists of a looping path around a central lake, and all around here are Shadow Grunts waiting to fight. Heading south first is your best option.

When you see the opportunity to follow a break in the path south, do so.
You’ll have to beat a Grunt to get past, but it is worth it if you want to beat all the trainers here.

To proceed, it’s best to defeat every single Shadow Grunt on this route before heading in for the confrontation with Ivory. Follow the looping path around beating them as you go, extending even to the northern exit to Route 7.
Once you’ve done that, go into the long stretch of grass to the west of the lake.

There are three Grunts in the long grass – after you make short work of them, look for an entrance into the trees to the east.

This path will take you to the final confrontation with the Shadow in this route.

There’s a clearing here with an item blocked by Strength boulders – move past it into another clearing and you’ll see a cozy-looking house.
Confronting Ivory

There’s a Grunt barring access to the house proper – beat them just like all the others and you can head inside.

Ivory has captured two old people who live in the house – they’ve got something she needs, and it’s what Jax was sent here to look for.
Before you can do anything, she challenges you and Jax along with one of her minions.

After You Win

Ivory and her grunts escape, but you do manage to turn the old couple back into normal by defeating their Shadow Warrior forms.
Dr. Harth tells you that the Grunts stole the Prison Stone and are on their way to the Ruins of Void to unleash something terrible.

Jax tells you to head back to Tehl Town to find the Fallshore Gym leader.
In order to get through Thundercap Mountain, you’ll need to use Strength, and therefore you need his Badge.
Route 9, Liberated

If you want to do some training on the way back, Route 9 is now full of new trainers to challenge.
If not, head southeast to carry onwards.

Either way, continue southeast and you’ll find yourself in Tehl Town.

You can find Mel just outside the KBT Expressway entrance. He’s a little distracted, but after you talk to him he’s ready to head back to the Gym to open it up.
Head back along Route 10 to Fallshore Gym and you’ll be able to take him up on his challenge.
