To get to Tarmigan Town and its mansion – and the Mega Evolution challenge – you’ll have to go through Cliff Cave, which leads to an upper section of Route 11.
The cave chambers are straightforward, with very few twists and turns. Go north and then west up the stairs.

You’ll see a cave exit here – go through it and you’ll be on a cliff ledge.

A few Strength boulders block the path, but they’re easily moved.
Kindler Cole will challenge us on the way through.

Once you get past him, you’ll see stairs to another cliff ledge and an entrance to another Cliff Cave chamber.

As soon as you enter, go north and you’ll see a ladder to an upper level. Climb it.

Once you’re up here, go out of the cave and you’ll be on Upper Route 11 proper.

There’s a Hiker here, waiting in the long grass to ambush us.
After you beat him, walk north.

There are two Bird Keepers in the next area – you can fight or evade them if you wish, though the experience may be helpful for the challenges ahead.

North of them is the end of Route 11 and the entrance to Tarmigan Town.

This is a relatively small and sleepy town, with only a few things to pick up before you head into the mansion.

Walk north and you’ll see two houses side-by-side – head into the left house first.

The man in this house will offer you a Pachirisu if you trade him a Manectric.

In the house on the right, there’s a Kindler who will teach you Fire Punch for 2 Red Shards. However, the old man in this house hates him, so he’ll give you those 2 Red Shards you need if you talk to him.
Once you’re done in those two houses, go north.

You’ll see a weird building here – this is the Dream Research Lab.
Speak to the Scientist waiting outside and he’ll give you a Dream Mist.
You can then head inside the Dream Lab, and speak to one of the scientists inside and she’ll give you TM85 Dream Eater.

The Pokémon Center and Poke Mart are in the middle of town – head there next.

There’s an old man with an Abra inside the Pokémon Center who will offer to teleport you to the bridge on Route 11 outside the south entrance of Cliff Cave.
Helpful if you ever need it.

Northeast of the Pokémon Center is a house with a boy inside suffering from nightmares – there’s nothing to do here for now but you will need to come back here in the endgame.
Go east, and the next building you will see is Tarmigan Inn.

However, it’s been closed for a while.
Head north from there and you’ll see Tarmigan Mansion.

You’ve finally made it to the mansion, which is the next part of your Pokémon journey.
Once you’ve healed up and have your team ready, head on inside.

As soon as you enter you’ll see the Guide, who gives you some advice – there’s a secret button on a statue somewhere that will open the way to Maxima and Mega Evolution.
In fact, there are three of them!
You’re in the lobby area of 1F at the moment. Head northeast and you’ll see a trainer blocking the way forward.

Defeat Expert Andy, and you’ll find yourself in a dining room.
There are two Chanseys in the mansion and one of them is here, right next to the stairs you need to take to the next floor.

Depending on how the battles go in the mansion, you may need to run back and forth to heal.

Up the stairs you’ll find a long hallway that stretches along the north wall of the mansion. There are three trainers for you to defeat here.

Once you make your way past the trainers, climb up the stairs and you’ll get to the top floor of the mansion.

Ace Trainer Samuel roams this room looking for a fight, so if you need healing, you might need to time it and slip past him to get to the Chansey.

In the south part of the room you’ll see a giant metal grate blocking the way forward.
However, there’s another staircase you can take.

Taking those stairs will put you on a landing of sorts on 2F, and Expert Clancy challenges you before you can go any further.
Once you beat him, take the stairs down to 1F.
Scientist Ted is in this room, and once you beat him you’ll see a statue in the corner.

This is one of the secret switches – press it, and the gate on 3F will open.

When you go through the open gate, however, there are two trainers waiting to ambush you with a Double Battle.
After they’re taken care of, continue east along the hallway and you’ll find a giant room filled with statues.

There are quite a few paths to take, but first go left when you enter the maze and go through that passage north.

When the path forks, go east and wind around until you see a Pokémon statue – this is the statue with the second switch you need to press.
Once that’s done, go back to the entrance of the maze.

Go east and take that path north.
There’s an optional trainer you can fight on this side of the room if you wish.
When the path forks, go left and follow it all the way to the staircase down to 2F, and the final hallway in the mansion.

This is the last area before you get to challenge Successor Maxima.

Head south and you’ll need to beat two Experts, Ken and Sheri.
The south end of the hallway is a one-way drop into the basement of the mansion – the only thing left to do is to fall into it!

Once you fall down, just head up until you find the Successor waiting for you.
Battle for Mega Evolution

In order to gain the power of Mega Evolution, you’ll have to defeat Successor Maxima.

She has a well-rounded team, and she shows off Mega Evolution on her Altaria. She’s also got two Hyper Potions, which can make the battle a little tougher than expected.
After You Win

Once she is defeated, she will give you the Mega Keystone – and she gives you the choice of accessories to put it in: a ring, a bracelet, a cuff or a charm.
Which one doesn’t matter, it’s just a bit of flavor.
She also gives you an Altarianite, so you can use Mega Evolution on an Altaria of your own.

North of her is a statue that has one final secret button you can press, which will reveal the exit.
The stairs here lead to the northwest section of the 1F lobby.

Now that the mansion has essentially been beaten, you’re given access to the mansion garden, which is through a door behind the gentleman in the dining room on 1F.
There’s a Zygarde Cell there as well as a Raid Den entrance.
Leaving Tarmigan Town
Once you’re well and truly done with the mansion, head outside and go to the north gate of Tarmigan Town, where you’ll find the way clear for you to proceed.

Your next destination is Dehara City, which is on the other side of Route 12.
Go through the gate and you’ll be on your way there.
