You’ve just ridden on the back of a Lapras down a waterfall and now you’re in Route 5, a pleasant but damp valley.
Head west through a patch of long grass and talk to the first person you meet.

Luckily for you, the first person you meet offers to heal your Pokémon for free, and acts as another waypoint in your long journey.
Once you finish healing up, walk east and you’ll get challenged by Lass Sally.

After you get past Sally, there’ll be a man jogging up and down the path in front of you.
He offers a mission: walk 150000 steps and he’ll give you something interesting.
This is something you can just do naturally in a playthrough, so when you eventually reach that number, head back here and he’ll give you Carbos – not just one though. FIFTY doses of the stuff.

Once you have the walking mission under way, make a start on it by walking west and you’ll run into Youngster Ben.
There’s a bit of a junction here – go to the north and follow the corridor through the trees.

You’ve arrived at the Pokémon Day Care, and there’s lots of things you can do here before ending up in Crater Town.
Pokémon Day Care

You’ll see someone on the left that needs your help with some research. You’ll need to show them various Baby Pokémon, and some of them can’t be caught – they must be bred at the Day Care holding certain rare incense items:

If you’re lucky and patient enough to do all that, your prize is an Oval Charm, which will increase the chances of an Egg being found at the Pokémon Day Care.

Just to the right of the entrance to the Day Care is a breeder who needs your help.
Every day, you can battle their Pokémon to help make them stronger, and this will make you stronger in the process.

As with most other Pokémon games, leaving a Pokémon at the Day Care will raise its level as you walk around and go about your business. Come back periodically and you’ll have a stronger Pokémon.

Unova Starter House
Once you’re finished at the Day Care, head back to the intersection and take the south path. You’ll see another fork in the road, and when you do, immediately follow it west.

You’ll see a house in the middle of the woods. Go inside, because the person living here has a present for you.

A trainer from Unova lives here, and she has three Unovan starter Pokémon that she can’t raise anymore.
You can pick one now, and come back when you have 4 and 7 badges respectively to collect the other two.

Back onto Route 5
When you’ve got your brand new Unovan Pokémon, head south and you’ll be challenged by Youngster Calvin.

Now that you’ve seen all that there is to see on Route 5, go south and you’ll see a town in the middle of a massive crater – Crater Town.

There are a couple of things for us to do here – first, go to the Pokémon Center.

Investigate the bookshelf next to the counter and you’ll see a hidden path leading to a small room with a Clefairy in it – this is one of many secret areas where you have the opportunity to battle or catch one rare Pokémon.

After you’ve caught or defeated the Clefairy, walk south until you find the house that is tucked into the southeast corner of the crater.

This is the house of the Move Maniac – he will make your Pokémon remember a move that they have forgotten in exchange for Heart Scales.
Since we don’t have any of those yet, leave and continue west around the crater’s edge.

There are two Shadow grunts having a whispered conversation with each other at this end of town, and you can’t get past them.
Walk north, down into the crater a little, and you’ll see a Poke Mart.

The Poke Mart is a great place to get supplies, but there’s another thing worth getting in this particular location, and it’s totally free.

The blonde-haired woman inside will give you TM70 Flash, which can light up dark places. You will need it later on.

West of the Poke Mart is the Crater Town Gym, but you may need a little bit more practice first before making an attempt.
Walk south from here and you’ll see a house just south of the center of the crater.

Inside this house is a family that are somehow able to detect when random Swarm events happen, and can tell you about them.
Talk to the girl in here and she’ll tell you where and what the Swarm is. Her father will give you a Berry at random if you show him a Pokémon caught from that particular swarm.

There’s one more thing for us to pick up in Crater Town, and that’s a mission from the southwest house.
The KBT Expressway

The man who lives here has a brother who has been kidnapped by a ruthless gang called the Black Emboar, and they’ve gone to the KBT Expressway.
Sounds like the perfect place to train up a bit before taking on the Crater Gym.

The KBT Expressway – which is short for the “King Borrius the Third Expressway”, according to the Hiker nearby – can be accessed from the northern exit of Crater Town.
